According to the legends, the idol worshipped here is more than 5000 years old. But there are no historical records to establish it. In the 14th century Tamil literature 'Kokasandesam', references about a place called Kuruvayur is made....
PUNNATHUR SIVA AND BHAGAVATHY TEMPLES These two temples are situated 3.5 kms away from Guruvayur in a
place called Punnathur. Punnathur was earlier the administrative center
of the Punnathur Rajas, which was later purchased by the Devaswom in
1975.
These
two temples and about 10 acres of landed properties were taken from
the receiver, Trichur Sub-Court. The main deities are Siva and Bhagavathy.
The Siva temple is also called the Thekke Ambalam and the Bhagavathy
Temple is called the Pathirikottu Kavu. In the Bhagavathy temple, Navarathri
Utsavam is celebrated.
